GTA 6 Gameplay: Every Feature Rockstar Confirmed
You can switch between Jason and Lucia, rob almost any shop, and your choices change how things turn out. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson also confirmed fast travel through a Ryde Me app, wildlife studying, and Snapmatic you can browse but not post to.
Most of what we know about GTA 6 gameplay comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, who walked IGN through about 30 minutes of the game. Everything below is something he said on the record. Where details come only from journalists’ descriptions, we say so.
Can you switch between Jason and Lucia?
Yes. You can swap between the two leads, and the other one carries on with their own routine. Switch over and you might find them at the safehouse or out somewhere else. During police chases your partner can take the wheel while you shoot.
What can you do between missions?
Robberies are a big part of it. Nelson says you can “rob pretty much anything”, including small shops, and planning a getaway car first helps. Other activities he listed:
- The zoo, scuba diving, parachuting, kayaking and the beach
- The gym. Training together boosts both characters at once.
- Studying and collecting wildlife without killing it, a system carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2
Do your choices matter in GTA 6?
Yes. Nelson says outcomes depend on big decisions and lots of small ones, and “the small ones add up”. Jason and Lucia text and call each other, and keeping up with those check-ins matters for their relationship.
How do cars work in GTA 6?
| Feature | What Rockstar said |
|---|---|
| Stealing cars | You can always carjack a driver. Some parked cars need story progress and the right tools. |
| Selling cars | Fences pay less for damaged cars, so it can pay to repair them first. |
| Personal vehicle | Call it any time. It holds every weapon you’ve bought. |
| Fast travel | The Ryde Me rideshare app works as fast travel. |
| Waypoints | Hold down on the D-pad to drop a quick waypoint. |
Vice City’s streets are narrower and closer to real-life scale than in past GTA games.
How do you lose the police?
On foot, Nelson says ducking through alleys is usually your best bet. Missions are also more open: you don’t have to use the planned escape route.
Is Snapmatic in GTA 6?
Yes, but you can only browse and follow accounts. You can’t post. In Nelson’s words, “you just lurk”. There are also more radio and TV ads than in any GTA before. See our radio stations guide.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar hasn’t given a size. Nelson’s only answer was that it’s “a very big map”. Explore what we know on our interactive map.
What we’re still waiting on
- Details of the wanted system. Previews describe witnesses reporting your clothes and car, but Rockstar hasn’t explained it in its own words.
- Frame rate and resolution on each console
- Whether there’s a first-person mode
