GTA 6 map nearly as big as three past games combined

Rockstar has told Edge magazine that GTA 6's total landmass is nearly as big as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. The studio also said the world is dense as well as large, with co-studio head Aaron Garbut describing a jump of an order of magnitude.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar has put a figure on the map size for the first time. Speaking to Edge magazine, the studio said the total landmass in GTA 6 is nearly as big as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.
By the studio's own comparison, that makes the map roughly twice the size of GTA 5's and about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. The detail was reported by GameSpot on 29 October 2026.
Is the GTA 6 map just empty space?
Rockstar says size is only part of it. The studio describes the world as dense as well as large, so the extra space is not meant to feel like filler.
Co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the game features an order of magnitude more detail. That points to a map built around things to find and do rather than distance alone.
When is GTA 6 out?
GTA 6 is due on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced.
The map detail is now official from Rockstar rather than a fan estimate, which settles one of the longest-running questions about the game.
